Humayun’s Tomb Delhi – The Foundation of Garden Tombs

Experience a spectacular masterpiece that makes the foundation of a fascinating trend of Mughul architecture at Humayun’s Tomb; one of the many grand tombs of the Mughul era. Built in the year 1570, Humayun’s Tomb is the first garden tomb in the whole of the Indian subcontinent. It started its very own trend which reached its epitome in the grand and the glamorous Taj Mahal.

Humayun’s Tomb emulates grandeur in every bend, arch and detail. This double domed structure is an architectural masterpiece that has captivated its visitors time after time. Humayun was the second Mughul Emperor of India. He was a leader much loved by his people and was the son of the great Emperor Barber and was the father of the prominent ruler Akbar. 14 years after Humayun’s death in the year 1556 his wife Bega Begum commissioned the construction of this tomb. It was a mighty task at the time. It cost a total of 1.5 million Rupees and brought together some of the finest craftsmen from all round India. The tomb itself stands at the centre of a large garden that is laid out in a four-fold style.

Surrounding are pools that are joined by channels with a pavilion and bath located on the northern and eastern walls. Right around the mausoleum, arched walls ornament the surroundings. Its octagonal shape only adds to its historic grandeur. The highlighted dome of the tomb stands at a height of 42.5 metres and is made of stunning pearl like marble. It is supported by decorated pillars, intricately designed with typical Mughul inscriptions. Although initially it was solely dedicated to the Emperor Humayun, it was later used to house the graves of various other eminent Mughuls.
