The Pride of Delhi – Qutub Minar

New Delhi, the capital city of India, is a city known for its exotic beauty and heritage. Serving as the seat of the executive, legislative and judiciary arms of the Government of India, New Delhi is also a popular tourist destination of India. The city is known for its rich historical heritage, vibrant culture, colourful society, and many historic and recreational monuments.

One of the most amazing attractions which can be seen from almost all the areas of the region is the Qutub Minar. This massive minaret is considered to be one of the marvels of Indo-Islamic Afghan architecture, and is known for its grandeur and sheer size. The Qutub Minar is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is among the most visited attractions in India.

Constructed in 1192 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, this grand minaret stands 72m tall and is magnificently constructed by marble and red-sandstone. Although the exact reason for this structure to be constructed is not clear, it is assumed that it was to commemorate a victory, as Mughuls used to construct such structures after their victories, while others believe it was built as a way of calling people for prayer. The Qutub Minar has five stories, each of which is adorned with intricate designs of traditional art and sculpture. One can see several magnificently carved angular and circular flutings along the outer walls of the structure which are intricately and skillfully designed. One might even observe verses of the Qur’an carved on the sandstone walls of the minaret. Climbing to the top of the minaret requires climbing over 370 steps, yet the climb is most certainly worth it as the top of the Qutub Minar offers breathtaking eagle eye views of the city of Delhi. This minaret has withstood the ravages of time and several other damages, and serves as a structure of immense integrity and grandeur. Therefore, the Qutub Minar is a must visit attraction for any visitor of Delhi.
