Discover Bangalore’s Famed Dravidian Sanctuary at the Sacred Basavanagudi Bull Temple

Long revered as one of Bangalore’s holiest religious points of interest the Basavanagudi Bull Temple is no ordinary Dravidian temple in southern India. Constructed as far back as the 16th century the statue of the venue’s patron mount was of a grey shade when first built although the granite statue has been rendered black due to the regular smearing of coconut oil by worshippers throughout its centuries old history. 

One of the more curious aspects of the statue is the iron shield found at the sculpture’s summit as local legend dictates that the shield was thus placed to prevent the statue from growing larger. Innumerable religious ceremonies are conducted daily at this Basavanagudi Bull Temple as pilgrims flock to pay homage to Lord Shiva’s vehicular companion. The celebrations conducted at the venue also include musical performances which are held in honour of the sacred bull of ancient record.

The Kadalekayi Parishe harvest time is tipped to be the best time of the year to visit the Bull Temple as visitors can immerse themselves in the Groundnut Fair in which farmers offer the first yield of their crop to the Nandi Bull in a symbolic ceremony.
